In addition to this outstanding group, CIRI will look to its members for researchers and scientists who can serve as adjunct advisors to the Council, to help with identifying and quantifying the research that has been, or needs to be, done. If you, as a CIRI member, have members of your staff that you would like to be part of the Adjunct Advisor Council, please let Frank Wiley know. He will be cataloging those organizations that have resources and are interested in participating.
Shaw, Kaivac & ISSA Contribute $150,000 to SAC
Three organizations have agreed to help underwrite the efforts of the SAC: ISSA, Kaivac, Inc. and Shaw Industries. Each has contributed $50,000 to fund SAC activities in 2006 and 2007. Our sincere thanks to these organizations for stepping forward and showing such commitment to the CIRI mission.
In all, CIRI will need to raise at least $500,000 for the first 24 months of SAC activities. Therefore, we are looking for seven additional sponsors who will contribute $50,000. To reach out to a number of major prospects, we have scheduled a web-based seminar for May 18th at 2 pm EDT. Dr. Berry will talk about the state of science and the cleaning industry. We plan to contact more than 100 major companies, associations and other organizations and invite their executives to listen in.
All CIRI members are invited to join us as well. We’ll be sending out more details later.
SAC Program Plan
As the SAC Chairman, Dr. Berry has put together a program plan for the Scientific Advisory Council. As he noted:
The following tasks are intended to define and demonstrated the role of the Scientific Advisory Council, establish CIRI as a source of credible science based information related to cleaning, and position CIRI to acquire new members and research funding from government and private sources.
Task 1. Establish and organize a Cleaning Science Advisory Council
Task 2. Identify Industry Council Members and Science Contributors with to act as science and technical associates for the council.
Task 3. Establish a Cleaning Science Research and Analysis Framework and Scope that defines "cleaning," answering such questions as: What is Cleaning? Why clean? How- and how effectively and efficiently--do cleaning processes work?"
Task 4. Survey the industry to determine what scientific research currently exists, and perform a meta-analysis of these studies to identify which meet the protocols and procedures of good research.
Task 5. Establish well organized, managed, and edited cleaning science information component of the CIRI website. Also identify a repository for hard copies of documents, with digital scanning capabilities.
Task 6. Conduct a Workshop and Prepare a Comprehensive Assessment "State of Cleaning Science 2006" for industry review and publication.
Task 7. Survey CIRI Members to identify research interests, issues, needs of the cleaning and related industries.
Task 8. Establish research and information exchange relationships with corporate, academic, government, and non-governmental organizations that support the development and codification of cleaning science. Identify research assets of the cleaning and related industries. Identify public and private research funding sources and apply for research funding.
Task 9. Prepare and present to the board a 3-year strategic information collection and research plan.
Task 10. Review papers and prepare for the CIRI Symposium and Conference in April 2007, at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Task 11. Prepare a monthly update on SAC activities and progress for members & Board.
2007 Symposium & Call for Papers
We are looking for papers dealing with cleaning science to be presented at the First Annual Conference & Symposium April 30 through May 2, 2007. The Conference will be held at the Stan Fulton Building on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus.
Dr. Thomas Jones, an associate professor at UNLV and CIRI Board Member who will act as editor of the Conference proceedings. All original studies and conceptual papers related to cleaning are invited, and particular consideration will be given to those papers that address sustainability issues and green cleaning methods. Papers offering international or cross-cultural perspectives are also encouraged.
